How To Configure Gmail HTTPS Setting
Posted on 15. Jan, 2010 by dimaks in Web
Recent changes in Gmail reveals that Google re-set the default behavior of Gmail to “Always use https” setting instead of “HTTP“. The thing is that, while signed in your Gmail account using a non-secure Internet connection such as public wireless or non-encrypted network, your account is susceptible to hijacking and thus, making someone to gain control of your account and pretend the real owner. Worst case is, the impersonator is free to touch and manipulate any sensitive data within your account.
For the above case that Google enabled “Always use https” option in Gmail for default protection. HTTPS stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure and that means, you are using a secured and encrypted protocol in doing any transaction with your Gmail account.
Anyway, you can disable or re-enable this feature in Gmail with the 5 steps listed below:
- Sign in to Gmail.
- Click Settings.
- Set “Browser Connection” to “Don’t use https” or “Always use https”.
- Click Save Changes.
- Manually change the URL to http://mail.google.com to start accessing Gmail via http.
I hope that this post would be of great help while you enjoy your Google / Gmail experience online. Nothing beats the practice and observance of Prevention is better than Cure.
