Santa Tracker has been in the top keywords searches in the Google Hot Trends for at least a couple of days now and people from around the world are actually tuning on, specially our Christian brethren who are in the belief that Santa is just around the corner of the globe, roaming around to distribute Christmas gifts to kids and families as well.
At the North American Aerospace Defense Command, several Santa Tracker volunteers anxiously wait for the loads of calls and emails as part of their operation during Christmas Eve – to inform curious children about Santa’s whereabouts. That was in 1955 when a certain newspaper ad invited the kids to place a call for Santa but mistakenly went to the line of the Continental Aerospace Defense Command, the NORAD’s predecessor.
During that time, the officers on duty did not want to disappoint the expecting kids so they played along to bring happiness to the young ones. They shared reports on the locations of Santa. It became a tradition at NORAD, an organization that is consist of U.S. and Canada command, monitoring the skies and seas of North America.
The Santa Tracker movement brought significant phase of volunteerism within the military officers. They had the chance to hear varied stories from the kids, some where heart-wrenching, like asking them to tell Santa to heal a kid’s brother from cancer. Some were simply asking for a pair of shoes.
Right now, Santa Tracker is using the hot on trend social media tools, hence the volunteers also send information on Santa’s Location via Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. The tracker also populates the mobile domains, with its Santa-tracking app for smart phones. There has been an enormous number of downloads (234,000 times) from Android Market and Itunes.
This year NORAD Santa Tracker website registered more than 2.2 million unique visitors
