Electric Jeepneys in the Philippines (Photos)

In view of the alarming concerns on global warming and climate change, several movements in consonance with sustainable transport and environment have been initiated globally. The movement has been the talk in the regional, urban and local government level. One of the great initiatives taken is the adoption of less or zero emission modes of transport and that includes the electronic jeepneys or e-jeeps.
Sometime in July 2007, Makati City staged the debut of E-Jeeps in hope of lessening the air pollution brought about by the rapid motorization in the metropolis. The city Mayor Jejomar Binay was joined by several Environment protection groups during the launch.
Each e-jeep is flat-nosed and can accommodate up to 17 passengers at a time. One of the jeeps at Wednesday’s Makati City presentation was pink, with several decorations… Conventional jeepneys have gained notoriety as smoke belchers, since most of their engines are usually reconditioned surplus parts.
This year (2009), the research institute where I work is lucky to be awarded with a study opportunity on the said E-jeeps/electronic jeepneys. So far, the endeavor has been smooth sailing and it is hoped that stronger bases for policy recommendations can be produced in the coming days.
E-Jeeps are guaranteed zero emission vehicle, no fuel needed, it is battery operated and runs silently. Here are some of the E-Jeeps photos that I took a few days ago.

In Makati, the electric jeepney is pretty useful, going where practically no PUV has gone before.

I wonder how fast it is? If you are transporting near distance, it will be a nice ride when your not in a hurry.

But then its not completely emission free then because the electricity from the wall socket was probably generated using fossil fuels.

I like the concept of E-Jeepney, but I think it’s better if the classic style of jeepneys were retained.
