Disposable email address?
Posted on 07. May, 2007 by dimaks in Technology
Having lived in Japan for a little bit over a year now, I came to know and get exposed with these things I better brand as “The modern fleeting things”. You can find almost everything disposable and in duo with the ever, well scattered vending machines all over the country. You can even find them in the midst of rural areas, in the farm areas for example.
Well anyway, this post isn’t about vending machines in Japan but rather, on disposable email address (providers) I came across few days ago. Though, I read somewhere that this service was out long time ago, it is still a new find for me.
Guerrilla Mail provides you with disposable e-mail addresses which expire after 15 minutes. You can read and reply to e-mails that are sent to the temporary e-mail address within the given time frame. -Guerrilla Mail
Once in the site, your time limit (initially 15 min) of using the temporary email address starts the count down. If you need more time, you can ask for time extension by clicking on an appropriate link, as the screen shot shows below.
I think this service will be convenient if you do not want to get into the hassle of going through your usual email opening procedures. Another thing is, if you are on the way to signing up for something but would like to safeguard your beloved official email address from getting spams, then Guerrilla Mail is for you.
Of the same nature, there is this “myTrashMail.com“. This one provides longer email address holding time – as long as between 12 hours and 30 days in their server.
Very useful for when you sign up at forums, newsgroups, software downloads, sweepstakes or other dubious sites. -myTrashMail.com
Cons? stalkers can now email you, unanimously.

Yeah, the ones who’ll benefit from these are the stalkers. I definitely won’t be needing or using this service in the near future. Great post though, good read.

Omg. What will they think of next. I was wondering how useful disposables are … So another tool for scam artists, stalkers, rumor mongers, and other bad elements in online society?!
But thanks .. its good to know the latest in IT products — dubious or other.
And oh … you have recharged? Welcome back to blogging, Dimaks.

This reminds me of a conversation I had today. A colleague accused me of not having a permanent address for her to send mails to, and I said,” I do, too! My email address!” I guess that says a lot about my lifestyle…so I dont think a disposable email address would work for me, unless I’m stalking someone!! Hmmm….

I was going to ask, “So what exactly would you use this for?” but then I read the comments and was enlightened. Still, 15 minutes is too short to write death threats or hate mails. 30 minutes to 1 hour is probably best, no?

ahhhhhh this would have come in handy during “those” times but I have no plans of sending death threats nowadays so I’ll just stick with my regular addy lol

I didn’t know most of this existed. “To the innocent much is revealed”.
Seriously, thank you for the education. Most interesting!

I think most of the commenters are missing the point of disposable e-mail services such as Guerrilla Mail. It’ s not an anonymous mailer for hate or threat mails. If you want to fake the sender of an e-mail, there are simpler things one can do.
Guerrilla Mail a service for when you want to register somewhere but don’t want to use your real e-mail address. That’s because often enough you can’t be sure where your e-mail address is ending up. On a spam list maybe. And that’s what you can prevent with Guerrilla Mail.
