So You Thought Marquez Should Have Won?

Update: Finally, someone posted a video highlighting Juan Manuel Marquez’s foot stopper trick! Scroll down below to watch it.
Well, I should have been writing about an update on the results of Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3 fight but while finding time to populate my writing canvass, this serious issue came upon the way, hence I am here sharing my humble piece. I just can’t hold my keyboard’s temper.
The recently concluded boxing trilogy of Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez pulled out mixed emotions, criticisms and doubts from the boxing crowd all across the globe. Many felt a little bit disappointed over Pacquiao’s performance that night, while on the other hand, Marquez seemingly got enormous nods that he should have won the fight and not “Pacman”. Although the judges gave out a majority decision, some thought that Pacquiao was just lucky to have charmed them so he got the win.
Even a well-known local sports commentator commented on national television that if he had to give a decision, Manuel Marquez should be the winner in the 3rd battle. The intensity of Marquez were all across the boards for praises, undermining what did Pacquiao undergo beneath the video camera’s main focus during the whole duration of the clash. People were too focused on the exchanges of punches between the two fighters; Only few were able to see what had happened down there. And I mean, between the feet of Pacquiao and Marquez. Let’s take a look at this sample – a photo taken by Chris Farina, posted at boxingscene.com:
Some doubted why Pacquiao did not have the usual loads of foot works. Could this be the answer? You be the judge. Even a non-boxer like me would come to a simple conclusion that this is a trick to make a person planted on a certain stance. It will make a boxer lose balance and unable to avoid any coming punches and to think, Marquez has been hailed for his being a tough counter puncher. This Foot Stop Trick just worked big time. It did not happen once. Let’s take a look at the screen captured photos below and note in what rounds did Marquez use the trick:
Alright, let’s take some brief summary here:
Round and Time Mark – Drummer Panda (http://www.facebook.com/tazky)
Foot Step Part 1 = 4th Round last 11 seconds
Foot Step Part 2 = 6th Round last 1:18 seconds
Foot Step Part 3 = 7th Round last 1:49 seconds
Foot Step Part 4 = 8th Round last 1:27 seconds
Foot Step Part 5 = 12th Round last 1:23 seconds
Foot Step Part 6 = 12th Round last 52 seconds
Some commented that this thing is an old trick and was even used by Chuck Wepner against the great Mohammad Ali, “causing him to go down in the 9th round of their title fight” (maurice, Yahoo! Answers). Here are some more thoughts on this “Foot Stop Trick” thing:
(Is it illegal to step on your opponents foot in a boxing match?)
(tozknack, Yahoo! Answers) stepping on the opponents foot is one of boxing oldest trick. of course it is illegal. stepping on an opponents foot would make the other lose his balance and concentration. specially when the opponent is trying to side step or move backwards. it also prevents the opponent from avoiding a hook or a cross making him susceptible from being hit.
whether if its done on purpose or not if the ref sees you, you get a warning, if you do it again that means you are doing it on purpose thereby it could merit a point deduction.
(roco, Yahoo! Answers) no its not but if the ref sees that you sre doing it on purpose he will take points away and will disqualify you
(Jet, Yahoo! Answers) I think it is, if its purposely, but accidentally i don’t think its illegal
(lestermount, Yahoo! Answers) Some very good fighters accidentally stepped on the opponents foot, especially when throwing a hook.
It can be illegal if the ref decides you did it on purpose, but it happens by accident all of the time, especially if a righty and a lefty are fighting.
The thing is, the referee did not see the trapping scenes. Had referee Tony Weeks seen them, what do you think he will do? Was the foot stop trick on purpose? how many times did it happen?
Juan Manuel Marquez’s Foot Stopper Trick during the Pacquiao vs. Marquez 3 fight on Nov. 12, 2011. Thanks to personalitycult1113 (youtube.com/user/personalitycult1113) for posting.
So you still thought that Marquez should have won? You doubted why Pacquiao was a little bit lax on his foot works and overall performance? Think about it!

I also saw a video of this foot stopper trick in youtube. Okey, they say Marquez stepping on Pacquiao’s foot is an accident because Manny is a southpaw fighter and Marquez is an orthodox fighter? If that is so, why does Pacquaio didn’t step on Marquez’s foot? What about the 2 previous fights? Is there any video/pics that came out like this? Once or twice I say it could be unintentional but for the life of me, he did it like 6 times!!
During their 2 previous fights Pacquiao Knockdown Marquez thrice and it was a DRAW! Did you hear Pacquiao whine about it?!

Marquez admitted in HBO 24/7 that he was drinking performance enhancer and the reason why it was not found in his urine is that he stopped drinking it prior to this fight.
