Official Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Rankings – Heavyweight
Posted on 06. Jul, 2011 by dimaks in Sports
In a bid to have an overview of what had transpired in the many Mixed Martial Arts fights for quite a while now, Sherdog released this “Official Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) Rankings“. For the heavyweight division, we got Cain Velasquez (9-0) on the no.1 spot. Velasquez, the known top American Kickboxing Academy product is expected to fight against Junior dos Santos on November 19.
Following the list is Junior dos Santos (13-1), with his successful bout against a replacer Shane Carwin. The June 11 fight is but a ticket to a showdown with Cain. Can “Cigano” make it to survive the gauntlets that Velasquez got? That we will see on the 19th of November this year.
The third fighter on the list is Alistair Overeem (35-11, 1 NC). He will be looking into adding more to his wins by facing Antonio Silva sometime this fall.
Fourth in the rank is Fabricio Werdum (14-5-1). The man who brought a major upset to Fedor Emelianenko.
We got Brock Lesnar (5-2) on the fifth spot. Unfortunately, Lesnar had to undergo another intestine related surgery, hence the cancellation of his supposed fight with Junior Dos Santos in UFC 131. Lesnar is expected to come back in 2012.
For the sixth place, we got Shane Carwin (12-2). He started his career with 12 consecutive stoppage wins but was unable to answer the strikes on Junior Dos Santos during the conduct of UFC 131. Right now, Carwin has got 2 consecutive losses so he needs to beef up everything in his performance to stay on the top list of the MMA world.
Frank Mir (15-5) landed on the seventh place. Defeating Roy “Big Country” Nelson in UFC 130 was seen as a sign of comeback for the former UFC champion, heavyweight division. He looked well-conditioned and strong during the whole stretch of the bout, where he took a unanimous decision against Nelson.
Antonio Silva (16-2) is on he eighth position. He will be facing Alistair Overeem sometime this year.
The ninth spot is for Fedor Emelianenko (31-3, 1 NC). “The Last Emperor” needs to step up big time to brush up his tarnished MMA career due to his back-to-back losses.
Lastly, the tenth place got Josh Barnett (30-5). Barnett came back on June 18 and is now past the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix quarterfinal. Josh “War Master” Barnett is now waiting for his Strikeforce semifinals fight against Russian slugger Sergei Kharitonov.
Other contenders on the line are Sergei Kharitonov, Cole Konrad, Roy Nelson, Mike Russow and Brendan Schaub.
