Thailand’s Songkran Festival in April

What is the Songkran Festival? Songkran Festival is a water festival celebrated in Thailand, which lasts for 3 days, starting from April 13 until the 15th. This day is the day to mark the end of the previous year, hence it is also called Maha Songkran. At this time in Thailand, people from rural areas who are working in the city, go home to celebrate the festival with their family members and friends.
Songkran in Thai language means “move” or “change location”. This is the day the sun changes its position in the zodiac. This festival is also called the “Water Festival”. Thai people believe that water can wash away bad luck.
Songkran is a valuable tradition for the Thai community and religions as a whole. During this time, people visit their elders and pay respect by giving them gifts or dedication to the ancestors. In return, the old ones wish the youngsters for good tidings and success in life.
The community also go the temples to give charity to the monks. They also perform a bathing session for Buddha where the old and the young ones joyfully splash water on each other. Other occasion in this festivity also include parades and the conduct of the Miss Songkran Contest.
