Nicholas Coke, Born Without a Brain

Nicholas Coke, a baby born without a brain – Nicholas Coke is a baby boy from Pueblo, Colorado and was born with just a brain stem and without a brain. Indeed a living miracle. Why? Because this week marks his momentous benchmark on earth and was able to celebrate his first birthday. Usually, babies born like him only last for within hours. He was born with a genetic disease called Anencephaly.
Anencephaly is a cephalic disorder that results from a neural tube defect that occurs when the cephalic (head) end of the neural tube fails to close, usually between the 23rd and 26th day of pregnancy, resulting in the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp . Children with this disorder are born without a forebrain, the largest part of the brain consisting mainly of the cerebral hemispheres (which include the isocortex, which is responsible for higher-level cognition, i.e., thinking). The remaining brain tissue is often exposed—not covered by bone or skin. (http://en.wikipedia.org/)
Nicholas Coke’s mom Sheena says, “He can’t see, he can’t hear, he can’t suck. He doesn’t crawl, doesn’t sit up.”

Nicholas Coke’s mom just shed tears when prompted with the question on how long can little Nicholas go on with his fight for longer life. Sheena says, “It’s hard to know that I’m going to be burying my son soon, but it’s wonderful to know he’s made it a year.”
I think we are lucky enough with the things we have right now. At times, it is shameful to complain on small discomforts in life.
After knowing the case of baby Nicholas, I am very thankful that my kids are born healthy without any illnesses. I can only imagine the pain and suffering of the boy’s parents. I salute them for being so strong and intact for their little angel.
