Death from too much work is so commonplace in Japan that there is a word for it — karoshi. There is a national karoshi hotline, a karoshi self-help book and a law that funnels money to the widow and children of a salaryman (it’s almost always a man) who works himself into an early karoshi for the good of his company. read more

The killer work ethic must have killed more Japanese than killer quakes?
Oo nga, mukha ngang stressful mag-work sa Japan. You can see sa subway how deadly serious they are about going to work. Patay ka kung tanga-tanga ka at babagal bagal.

What’s the point of working if one can’t even enjoy life? I read that Japan also has a high suicide rate.

exactly, though as i observed they do have great inclination to recreations too – they like and enjoy sports, which is a good thing.
