Hockey Mom And A Pit Bull vs Lipstick On A Pig

Barack Obama, Lipstick On A Pig. The campaign temperature boiled so hot on Tuesday when Sen. Barack Obama allegedly referenced to the popularity-gaining lines of Vice Presidentiable Sarah Palin “You know the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick“, by saying “Lipstick on a pig” while on the verge of criticizing Sen. John McCain’s parallel takes on “Change”. Sen. Obama’s lines were;
“John McCain says he’s about change too, and so I guess his whole angle is, ‘Watch out George Bush — except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics — we’re really going to shake things up in Washington“
“That’s not change. That’s just calling something the same thing something different. You know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You know you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it’s still going to stink after eight years. We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”
McCain’s campaign said that Obama’s remarks were clear slaps at the Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. The above pronouncements seemed to hit some serious nerves and thus, had the Republicans demand for an apology, while on the other hand, the Democrats accused Sen. McCain of running a pathetic attempt to play the gender card.
End result is, Senator McCain campaign went on to announce a conference call that will focus on Sen. Obama’s remarks.
There were varied reactions and opinions from other involved politicians in this election campaign related commotion. Some said that Sen. Obama’s line “Lipstick On A Pig” is just part of an old joke but then, sen. McCain campaign is not that easy to let the thing go. In fact, his party released a Web Ad on Wednesday that played Obama’s lipstick on a pig comments, then asks “Ready to lead? No. Ready to smear? Yes.”

my impression is that mr. obama used the line as a fairly common idiom, and did not intend to insult either republican candidate. but then the other side pounced on it, using it to paint mr. obama as sexist. thankfully, quite a number of bloggers and media persons have pointed out that even mccain has used the idiom in the past.

The Republicans are obviously over reacting and milking this missue to gain sympathy for Palin. Devious move but apparently it’s working.

Apparently senator John McCain used exactly the same line earlier in the campaign so it is a bit hypocritical to accuse Obama.
