Summer seminar in Yamanashi
Posted on 20. Aug, 2007 by dimaks in Life

Every summer of the year, our laboratory has this tradition of holding a seminar outside the university. This time in Yamanakako – a village located in Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi, Japan. The summer seminar/outing was from August 7-10, 2007. Given the fact that the event is expensive, there is no special difference from our usual weekly presentations in each month of the year, except that people have gotten the mentality of producing too many powerpoint slides and overwhelm the fellow students and professors with piles of handouts. Where in my case, the best thing that I could do was to hunt some familiar Kanji and katakana and activate my hearing switch to off mode whenever I feel like sleeping (yes, in the middle of the presentations). Imagine straining your eyes with over a hundred or so slides from almost half of the presenters the whole day round, going across 4 days. Well, I was able to come up with around 30+ slides for my research progress and my presentation went quiet well – I got a bunch of very significant inputs from the professors and a few from fellow students.
Burning my bottom by the synthetic leather coated chairs in the function room is just half the torture. The weather was not so friendly, there was no air conditioning, plus the humidity was just irritating and sometimes I can’t help but go out and get some air by the window in the lobby. Comes night time and we were supposed to be sleeping – a Samurai comes in. Oh no, not a Samurai but rather one of our fellas who snore so badly that no matter how I wrap myself with the thick blanket, I can still hear his roar – I mean his snore. Man, that kid might be suffering from some heart disorder and I don’t think telling him frankly of what he is doing to us in the depth of the nights is a bright idea. After that awful night, I decided to take a sneak after the seminar and slept early. Lucky! by the time the other guys came in to sleep after rounds of Sake, I almost garnered about 6 hours of sleep. So then I opted to just spend most of the mornings, around 5am perhaps, walking by the shores of the Yamanakako lake.
Setting the tortures aside, the event turned out favorable to my shutter side of self. I was able to take some flower macro shots like the one below.

And of course, the lakeside was such a window to the astounding beauty of Mount Fuji (click to enlarge).

A macro ground shot of this tree branch (click to enlarge). How I wish, my digicam is way far higher in specs so that I can be able to capture subjects more vividly than they are now.

A sunset by the Yamanakako lake (click to enlarge).

Baseball moments (click to enlarge).

And this one below came from the photos taken by other Japanese students, tiled up in one image. The upper part (L-R) will give you a glimpse of how people sleep in the middle of the presentations. But that’s no big deal
even the Profs sleep too, so who am I not to? Mabuti na lang wala akong shots na tulog (It’s good though that I got no photos while sleeping) At the bottom part (L-R) of the photo shows some of the exciting and worth witnessing baseball moments we had. Notice that batting position on the lower left? Pang home-run diba? (home run form right?) Unfortunately, Seya san was fouled and the pitcher did catch the ball. At the lower right of the tile is one of our Profs, doing the base runs with her summer umbrella. Oh ha, laban kayo? (Beat that?)

Ganda ng pics!
How many more times do you have to endure that? Sleep away, my friend. Sometimes it’s better to sleep and then read up on a serious paper on the subject later. Makes more efficient use of your time.
Glad to hear you survived the torture.
Anyway, I also have an invitation to give a seminar at Yamanashi-U sometime in October. Sana maganda rin ang venue!

for this grand torture, would be every year, yikes! then we have the weekly ones. i agree on the sleep thing – makes me refreshed and re-charged, hence better concentration. but there is always the famous rush times, ya know.
