Secrets no more
Posted on 09. Feb, 2007 by dimaks in Life
I have been seeing this meme for quiet sometime. Now comes my turn to do it – being tagged by kathy
It tackles about 5 infamous secrets. So let’s see what 5 secrets we can dig.
1. Back in high school, I joined a theater arts guild to shed off some of my stage frights
Ever since, I have been the shy-type guy especially when it comes to public speaking involvements. When it comes to school activities that involve recitals in the class, school competitions and the like, I just can’t control my knees from shaking and voice from trembling. I even regarded the introduction of myself during every first day of the class in my high school days as torture.
As my ultimate dose, I joined a newly organized local theater arts guild in our school. There I learned the things about conquering one’s stage fright. Of course I had to undergo the torture but, I had no choice, it’s really the way how things should go. So I went on and here comes our first local show. Guess what, my role was being a robot – hidden in a mask we made out of scrap paper boxes
“Do I have to be shy inside this costume?” I told myself. Anyway, the show went on and at least, the tidious rehearsals made a big difference to me, until now.
2. I enrolled grade 1 when I was 5&1/2 years old
I took the very first step to schooling in one of the remote provinces in Mindanao. In that locality, parents had this improvised system of determining wether a child is eligible to enroll or not by asking them to touch their left ear with their right hand, from across the top of their head. I was able to do this and went to the school the next day for enlistment. So what would you expect? My mother went to school with me the whole year round
She even writes most of my class writing exercises because I write slow and I always finish way far behind my classmates. I always end up crying. Poor little boy, lol.
3. Walked my way from school to our house
I was in grade 4 when this happened. I and the kids who live within my neighborhood were about to go home. Accidentally, I could not seem to find my 1 peso coin in my pocket. I turned it inside and out for so many times but there is still no 1 peso. Until I realized, maybe the money fell through a small hole in my pocket. So there I started to worry. I asked my neighbor kids to lend me some but they just laughed. They went on ahead of me, rode the jeepney and left me in front of the school’s gate. My last resort? I had to take about 2km walk from school to our house. It was already dusk when I arrived home.. ‘saw my mother waiting, teary-eyed.
4. I am a frustrated paint artist
Since my high school days, I have been joining art contests, usually poster and collage. I was able to get the artist of the year award. My first course of choice for college was Fine Arts but there was no single school nearby that offers it except in the Luzon and Visayas regions, which seemed to be not an option since my family donot want me to venture away from our beloved Mindanao
So I had to stay and take Engineering course instead, in a catholic university – Notre Dame. With the intention of nurturing my painting passion, I joined art clubs in college, participated in regional as well as national contests. Won some, lost some. Then everything stopped when I went to UP for my masteral study, sometime in 1997. I miss my water and oil color brushes ..and my color palette too.
5. Like kathy and her sister, I also rode a jeepney without paying the fare
I did this out of curiosity
I used the same strategy as used by kathy and her sister. ‘sat right at the back of the driver, reached and handed over other people’s fare to the driver and get off at my destination without paying. The driver did not notice
Those were the days.. as part of relieving myself from conscience, I randomly give some extra coins to old men and women I see begging on the street and sometimes, to street children too.
Ok, you are too lucky to get a bonus, because I am adding one (1) extra:
6. I can move my ears and also, fold my tongue
Due to watching old shows of the late actor-comedian Chiquito (used to do this moving of the ears in one of his movies), I developed the passion for a day that I can be able to move my ears too. After like 2 months of trying hard, I finally did it. Now I can move both ears, alternately or together at once. I can also fold my tongue, like Dine’s daughter but she’s just amazing to do it many folds. And Dine can move her ears too.
Who to tag? I do not know really. Because it looks like, all of the people in my blogroll have done this meme already. So, sorry to cut the meme from my end.

I also walked home from school when I didn’t have any money for the jeepney. I must’ve spent it on junk food or something.

annamanila,
Thanks! and yes, stage fright is always there I think, it’s just a matter of conquering it when you’re at it at certain moments.
Masyado po kasi akong “naive”. Mabait po akong bata noon, lol. Shy lang po talaga. I might entertain my artist’s calling perhaps when I finish my phd. Or who knows, I can track back along the way

Leah,
Pag naabot mo raw ang tenga mo, that means 7 years old kana, pero nagkamali sila sa akin, lol.
Hello there! Until now, di ko pa rin alam ang logic kung bakit ganun ang naging sistema nung matatanda sa probinsya namin
I’ll do my best to track back with my arts then. I usually paint landscapes and abstracts.

tina,
It would have been creepy when right after you stand up from the jeepney seat, may sutsot kang narinig at sabay sabing “miss, mis, bayad mo!” hehe.
Sino naman ang naka-impluwensya sa’yo sa pagpapagalaw ng tenga?

Hi Dmaks:-) Ay pareho tayo sa #s 3 & 5; ako umuwi mag-isa when I was in nursery, I think I was 6. My mother was late, can’t remember why though, so I walked home. And it wasn’t a short walk either! Lucky me, nothing bad happened.
And I didn’t pay the fare because I forgot. When I got home, I realized I still got the change (coins) intended for the fare. No guilt there, though

First grade at 5 and a half years of age? Wow! you must be a genius!
No wonder you’re taking that course in Japan right now. You really are a smart man!
Bout the jeepney fare, I’ve never done it on purpose. The times that I didn’t pay for it was when I forgot about it and the driver also didn’t notice. Hehe

@pining

Buti ka pa may sundo noon
@Jaypee
Hindi pa kasi uso ang kindergarten noon, o kaya hindi pa available sa napaka-remote na area namin na ‘yon. Kaya deretso ako sa grade 1.
@angelblush
Lakas ng guts ah, lol. At ang bilis mong natutunan yung pagpapagalaw ng tenga, siguro promil kid ka
@rhodora
Mga anak po sila ng kapitbahay namin at alam nila na hindi ako nagbibiro kasi umiiyak na ako noong nanghihiram ako ng pera

HI Dimaks! That day you trekked from school to home, you became a man
! I bet from then on, you made sure you didn’t have a hole in your pocket , or have kept your money somewhere really safe. O, di ba , you learned something from that experience, and became the wiser for it.
Oh, I do remember the “chiquito ears”! I think he did that when he was about to kiss his lady love in a movie! I have been trying to do that move, but all I manage to do is arch my eyebrows ^0~

Gina,
That experience became my grandest stepping stone to do things on my own, to test my guts, take a chance and put utmost trust in HIM.
Hello there! thanks for dropping by. You are absolutely right on the lessons learned on that hole in the pocket. Since then, I have become the person who checks his pocket from time to time to check on things if they are still there or not
Chiquito ears! yeah, that was the exact movie where I saw the moving ears. If I remember it right, his right hand was bitten by the bees hanging by their hive by the tree branch
