Mediterranean Diet and Alzheimer’s

I saw this article from telegraph.co.uk which purports that sticking to Mediterranean diet can actually save one from accumulating the risk of Alzheimer. A study conducted by researchers headed by Dr Nikolaos Scarmeas from the Columbia University medical centre in New York took on their respondents’ (712 people divided into 3 groups) diets with reference to their observance of the Mediterranean diet.
Six years later, Dr. Scarmeas and his team conducted MRI brain scans of the people who participated in the research. The results are the following:
- 238 people had at least one area of brain damage
- Those who were most closely following a Mediterranean-like diet were 36 per cent less likely to have areas of brain damage than those who were least following the diet.
- Those moderately following the diet were 21 per cent less likely to have brain damage than the lowest group.
Interesting right? If unknowingly and by chance that among your alternatives to your known most effective weight loss pill is following a high intake of veges, fruits, cereals and fish, then you are lucky because such foods keep your brain alert and active. While on the hand, taking huge amount of dairy products, meat and chicken and even moderate alcohol will only drag you to having damage in the brain.
It is but high time to ponder over the foods that we put on the table.
