For those living in the countries that experience winter season, this small compilation of “best vegetables to grow during winter” maybe a pool of ideas on what home grown plants for consumption are best to invest on. Take note of the credit that the main ideas in this post are basically based on the article written by Bunny Guiness of the telegraph.co.uk. Without further ado, here we go for the list:
1. BROAD BEANS. These are species of bean (Fabaceae) that is native to north Africa and southwest Asia. It is known for its great taste when wilted with butter. As per personal experience, this is also good as a side dish or finger food. You can just boil them then season with salt to taste.
2. ASPARAGUS. It is mostly available during autumn planting and is actually a spring vegetable. It is native to most of Europe, northern Africa and western Asia. Asparagus is low in calories and sodium. It is a good source of vitamins B6, calcium, magnesium and zinc.
3. PEAS. Modern times take it, usually boiled or steamed, while in early times, they are mostly grown for their dry seeds. Peas became very important part of modern society’s diet plans specially in the Middle East, North Africa and Europe sometime in the Middle Ages era.
4. GARLIC. This is perhaps the easiest crop to grow in the neighborhood. Aside from being your all-time cooking or maybe garnishing partner in the kitchen, garlic is also good for some instant medications, like lowering blood pressure, curing tooth aches and so on.
5. ONIONS / SPRING ONIONS. This can be harvested early, so it is best to sow them during December. Onions are easily propagated and transported after harvest. They are heavily used as part of many culinary creations or main ingredient by itself. Interestingly, onions are believed to have been worshiped by the ancient Egyptians, due to the belief that its spherical shape and layers of concentric rings are symbols of an eternal life.
6. LETTUCE. It is a vegetable that prefers cold weather, though it sort of strictly requires light, sandy, fertile and humus-rich soil in order to grow efficiently. It requires soil that can hold enough moisture during summer time, so technically a soil with a pH of 6.5 is preferred. Lettuce is grown all over the world.
7. SPINACH. These are great in salads. You must have known spinach being portrayed in the famous Popeye the Sailor Man cartoon TV show back in the days. While the vegetable is associated with great power after eating it, spinach was chosen in such TV cartoon cum promotion, because of its content of vitamin A.
8. SPRING CABBAGE. I love cooking this vegetable, sauteed or boiled with meats. They are good in soups or stews. Cabbage is popular in central and eastern Europe. In tropical countries like the Philippines, cabbages are often cooked with butter and cans of corned beef for one happy family meal.
There you go for the eight (8) vegetables to grow during winter time. All of the above-mentioned vegetables may grow on small vases or pots right in your verandas, but still, adequate garden space is recommended for better growth and production. With that, appropriate gardening skills and maintenance are also needed.
For environmental concerns, one should learn the many arts and techniques of providing the necessary nutrients to your plants. This may include the use of a tumbling composter for one natural method of composting, organic fertilizers for safer produce for consumption and other green gardening methods for a certain happy and healthy winter season.
