2 Years in Japan, An Observation
Posted on 19. Jul, 2008 by dimaks in Life
Within two years of residing here in Japan, I have been getting a generous invitation from a Japanese family every new year for a celebration. It’s one of the best things that I came to appreciate in this new environment with a completely different social norm compared to the Philippines.
One of the amazing things that I observed in this specific Japanese family is their keen interest on home entertainment items, ranging from extremely flat-wide screen television to the very expensive looking piano. You might find it fancy to reveal but I really enjoy the living room ambiance every time I get invited by the very good family host. The living room sofa always felt good while savoring my green tea in the evening while chatting with the family members. Movie watching has always been gold, matched by the ceiling mounted speakers to soothe my hearing pleasure. Before heading to bed, a very relaxing hot bath smoothly calls the day off.
Who would not want to be hosted by a family like them? You get invited every new year, toured in the nearby districts for free, not to mention that they are famous tourist destinations, as well as get introduced to other family members in the neighborhood, and sent off home with memorable tokens and heart warming message of “please come back next year”.

My own observation of a Japanese household (very limited and very long time ago) can be summed up in a word: minimalist. I was struck by the bare walls, the absence of big appliances, the absence of display cabinets.
I was also struck by the hospitality, the enthusiasm for foreigners, the desire to please, and their nationalism.
But as I said mine was a very limited experience.

annamanila,
minimalist, yes. they got the big appliances these days but they really have this great sense of arranging things.
i think hospitality is another thing that is common between Filipino and the Japanese.

Funny, a japanese friend of mine who lives here aren’t that tidy at all in the house. But the hospitality of japanese people are very much the same with Pinoys, like iwanan ang chinelas sa labas ng pinto, hehehe.
If I visit Japan, I will not be surprise seeing their technology life (pretty much that I will probably insist to find that cube box apartment design somewhere in Tokyo) but I really want to see the traditional Japanese.
