Sukiya encounter
Posted on 20. Mar, 2007 by dimaks in Life
After knowing that I got no more meats and veges in my fridge to cook for dinner, I decided to just go to the nearest restaurant and get my hunger addressed ASAP. I only had a brunch so by 7pm, it felt like there is some kind of a riot happening inside my stomach. So off I went to this Chinese restaurant that is around 10 minutes bicycle away from my dormitory. When I arrived, it looked like a group of students happened to book a reservation for a party, so I opted to find another restaurant. My quick choice – Sukiya.
Here’s where an encounter happened. After about 5 minutes of eating my food, a 20ish Japanese guy came, sat on one of the stools and called the waitress for his order. While waiting for his food, I noticed with my peripheral vision that he is looking at me. I didn’t change my angle of site and face direction but I know, he is still looking at me. After a while, he does not seem to take away his stare. He seemed to be looking for something ..I must have stepped onto his shoes somewhere around the university, or I might be using the chop sticks the wrong way and sipping my soup without the disturbing sounds and that makes me look stupid, or maybe this guy is some kind of a gangster – things that were playing in my head.

Until I could not stand it and got tired of holding on to my consciousness that somebody seems to be counting how many or how big my chop sticks can dig from my rice bowl and put it inside my mouth, I suddenly turned my face towards him and stared the way he do. He blinked. I didn’t. I kept on looking at him until he dropped his line of site and started eating his food. You see? he even forgot that his food is already in front of him. What a lamer. He was just waiting for me to look back and stare the way he does. So while we were eating, I decided to maintain a slight silly grin on my face. He never stared back.
I am bound to be friendly in this foreign land but with these kinds of guys, i don’t think so. He could have talked to me or asked me politely and I could even teach him better Engrish. Anyway, he must have been having a bad hair day so maybe that’s why. I kept my cool and did not go beyond the stare. I just tried to scare him and I guess I was successful. And I give due respect to the very good and socially groomed Japanese friends and colleagues I got so far.
And yes, later when I arrived home, I thought of, what if I had the capability of turning my face into like this one? Spawn and Hulk at the same time
I guess, I could have scared him all the more.

hey Hulk! hehe
It’s rude to stare but then again it’s also rude to make sounds while eating your food (but polite in Japan of course) Who knows baka may gusto ngang itanong or something.

Elaine,
It could be attitudinal. I heard Japanese people coming or living in the outskirt cities where the presence of foreigners are not that much, tend to give that kind of treatment. I mean, people residing within the vicinity of the university where interactions with foreigners are frequent usually don’t seem to mind foreigners going around.
Thanks for the patronage and greetings
