How many of us who are heavily involved with the daily woes of work, personal routine or just plain livin’ la vida loca and have eventually adopted the practice of skipping breakfast? And for the bloggers out there who spend the rest of the night till the wee hours, hopping from one blog site to another or just plain tinkering with his/her blog templates, entries and widgets and then end up spending the whole day sleeping (or stay awake til the next day and get those dark and sagging eye bags) like a tired lion and skip breakfast?
As breakfast has always been said to be the most important meal of the day, Finnish researchers (as reported by the BBC news) say it could be more crucial than the concept of importance - those who skip meal are more likely to have an unhealthy lifestyle. Some people view that skipping breakfast saves time in the morning and help in losing weight. But the Finnish researchers further stated that;
…those who missed the meal were likely to be fatter, possibly because they are more likely to have unhealthy snacks mid-morning to boost their energy levels. They were also likely to be less well-educated, making it harder for them to get a job.
This is all the more supported as stated below;
People who skip breakfast tend to go on to have a snack mid-morning, usually something unhealthy like a chocolate bar - Amanda Wynne, British Dietetic Association
On the first contention, Certified Nutrition Specialist Shereen Jegtvig stated that;
A study by Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital of children in Philadelphia and Baltimore showed that children who regularly ate breakfast had better standardized test scores, better behavior, and were less hyperactive than children who skipped breakfast.
Furthermore, as stated in the Univ. of California health journal;
Studies indicate that the metabolism of people who habitually skip breakfast can slow down to a point where it burns 100-200 fewer calories a day. When they skip breakfast, some people will experience symptoms of low blood sugar. They will feel light-headed, shaky, weak and be unable to concentrate, says Green-Burgeson - a registered dietitian at UC Davis Medical Center.
And for the above arguments, here’s Green-Burgeson’s recommendation:
choosing a cereal that’s low in sugar - less than five grams per serving - and using nonfat or one percent milk. A serving of fruit, such as half a cup of orange juice, makes the breakfast complete.
Green-Burgeson says bagels and toast are good choices, while “oatmeal is one of the healthiest things you can eat.” Another quick, healthy option is to drink a blended mixture of plain yogurt, fruit and milk.
Green-Burgeson says, “People who don’t eat breakfast shouldn’t use that as an excuse to eat more at other times of the day.”
Now I must admit, I was guilty then by skipping breakfast for the past months or so. But then, since my boring hyper acidity have persisted more than a couple of times already, I tried my best to take breakfast each day. And although my purpose was just to have my tummy filled with something before I engage with my daily academic routine, my choice was even right by buying cereals and milk and occasionally with fruits, as contextualized by the researches and professional statements cited above. Anyway, I think there are also substitutes for the said kind of foods in terms of nutritional facts and benefits. But lets leave it to the nutritionists
albeit, I assume, most of us Filipinos would say, “Da bes pa rin ang pinoy sinangag with matching tuyo, pritong itlog at kamatis, with coffee on the side”.
So you guys and gals out there, how do you regard your breakfast? Or how your breakfast has been going on?

Hmmm oh well to be honest I don’t really watch my health when it comes to whatever I put inside my mouth hehe not that I put anything on it. Just that these studies are always telling us that what we eat is not good, actually they always imply that almost everything we eat is unhealthy. What can we do? Everything has preservatives, trans fat etc? I do skip breakfast if you’re talking about eating early in the morning but I eat at around 10am then delay my lunch and delay my dinner some more lol

i used to eat three complete meals when i was still in manila, but of course my mom would always cook! but here, no yaya, no mama, no food
but i love oatmeal! best with cinnamon and raisins!

Seriously, I’m guilty of skipping, or having an inappropriate meal taken instead of the proper breakfast. Sometimes I just have coffee and scram. It’s unhealthy, I know, but yeah, sometimes I value a 15 minute snooze more than I would my breakfast.
January 25th, 2007 at 6:04 pm
Well I think that’s a common issue for the working people - who are always at race with time.
January 25th, 2007 at 6:05 pm
Thanks for dropping by. I also do that when I was in high school and I guess until college(?). And I suppose, aside from it being a bad practice, my stomach problem’s starting point can be traced from skipping my breakfast.

Welcome! Yeah, time really is a big factor. Although nowadays, people have learned the art of going by the situation and some are now eating their food on the way for their daily trips. Hmm, “Elimination Diet”? I am only aware of the “After 6″ thing.

Good for you

Sige, I would be glad to hear your tambay highschool classmates
Well, studies are sometimes too much biased though, nonetheless they are worth considering for their ideal recommendations.
Now you have this brunch phenomena huh! I do it too –because I can hardly wake up early :p

‘wawa ka naman.. hehehe. Ang alam ko pa naman e nag-aaral kang magluto. Ah well, it’s not because of the know-how –but your call center sked. Oatmeal with cinnamon and raisins sounds sosy

Seriously … my appetite is nil at breakfast, stirs up an itsy-bitsy bit at lunch, peps up at supper, and really zings at midnight.
So i dont skip breakfast, it has skipped me. And I am always surprised when members of my family expect it.
Have read of the ills of no-breakfast. But am a living contradiction. Am so healthy it very nearly embarasses me. knock on wood.

I used to skip breakfast too, back when I was still a student. But when our daughter was born, I have to make sure that our family eats right at the beginning of the day, everyday. I actually don’t recall having skipped breakfast ever since.

Brunch is more popular for people like me who can’t cook that early in the morning so I usually eat my brunch at work where we have a cook to do it for me hehe

Well, that means you do not belong to the individuals “They were also likely to be less well-educated…” as addressed by the research finding

Hey have you gone to a doctor for consultation or something?

Ah the mighty danggit, they are so crunchy and mouth-watering. Notorious when they go with “suka” or fresh lemon juice.
January 26th, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Good for you then buddy. I observed it, day is always good to start when you have something in your stomach.
January 26th, 2007 at 2:06 pm
The coupling of “work and coffee” has become popular, I have noticed. I also do that before, but not anymore when a doctor told me that coffee is an arch enemy of hyper acidity. Plus, I also read about it from some online articles.
Thanks for the compliment. I was once a graphics-heavy web page maker but that was not so good with people with bad or average internet connection
…tux will be knocking at your door soon
and thanks for linking me up; you too were linked.

Tux sent, Enjoy!
@Elaine,
Waking up early like 6am these days have become uncommon I think, especially with the later generation. There have been lots of stuffs to stay late with in the night. Ah, I heard about 6-12-6 too, I think its the ideal one. And yes, maybe having as much references as possible is somewhat an influence of what I mostly do for the past years - writing technical papers.
