2008 Beijing Paralympics – National Delegates

The 2008 Summer Paralympic Games in Beijing, which will be shooting off from the 6th of September until the 17th, 2008, have constantly gained attention and distinct popularity through the years worldwide. In essence, It is akin to the Olympic Games as an international grand event. This is perhaps due to the strong confluence of heightened awareness and support for the individuals with disabilities, yet posses the strong will and determination to show off their skills and talents.
Now, national disabled athletes across the globe are at the peak of conditioning state, hoping to kindle another thrilling start up flame at its official commencement.
About 4,000 athletes from 150 nations around the world will come to Beijing, the Vietnam Net Bridge news said.
The China Delegation
Remarkably, this time of the year brings the largest China delegation to “Beijing Paralympic Games” in Chinese history.
On July 17, a conference was hosted by the Chinese delegation to the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games. In the conference, it was revealed that 547 representatives will be part of the group, which will be comprised of 332 athletes – all expected to compete in the set 20 events. Moreover, there will be:
- 197 men and 135 women to make up the competitive team (again, the largest in Chinese history), wherein the oldest athlete is 51-years-old and the youngest is 15-years-old.
- In comparison to the Athens Paralympic Games, “the Chinese delegation this time around has increased by 261 people, which includes 132 more athletes than in 2004“.
- The athletes come from all walks of life from all over the country: students, farmers, self-employed individuals and workers will be representing China in September. For 226 of these athletes, 2008 will be their Paralympic debut year.
For the first time, China will participate in the following events:
- Equestrian,
- Wheelchair Rugby
- Wheelchair Basketball
- Rowing
- Sailing
- Boccia
- Goalball
- Football 5-a-side and;
- Football 7-a-side
The Vietnam Delegation
As per news from the official Olympic Games Website, there will be:
- Nine (9) Vietnamese athletes to attend the Beijing Paralympic Games
- Among the above athletes:
- four (4) will compete in weightlifting
- three (3) in track and field
- one (1) in swimming and;
- one (1) in judo
A note however, that a report sent to the Viet Nam Culture, Sports and Tourism Ministry by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) says, there will be eight (8) delegates to participate; Inconsistent by 1.
In a report sent to the Viet Nam Culture, Sports and Tourism Ministry, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said eight Vietnamese athletes had earned the right to compete at the September event. (Source)
It is the first time in the history of the games that the host, in this case China, decided to bear all expenses for the participants.
The official website of the Beijing Paralympics Games revealed in one of its publications that the “Beijing 2008 Paralympic Torch Relay has a total of 850 torchbearers“. The selection will be mainly through organized recommendation and review.”
The selection criteria are as follows:
- Be patriotic and dedicated to the Olympic and Paralympic Movement.
- Support the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and practice paralympic concepts.
- Be distinguished for remarkable feats in their profession or Community, or for a personal story that serves to inspire or motivate fellow citizens.
- Be generous and dedicated to Community services and with high moral standard.
- Be distinguished for contributions to the Olympic cause, or for extraordinary performance at the past Olympic Games or Paralympic Games. (Source)
