Superflyweight champion MARVIN “Marvelous” SONSONA will be facing a Mexican challenger ALEJANDRO “Payasito” HERNANDEZ in a 12-round bout on November 21 at Casino Rama in Ontario. This fight is the first title defense of the new Filipino boxing hero, definitely a new rising star Marvelous Sonsona. And yes, he is also from General Santos City, where the 7 title holder in 7 different divisions Manny Pacquiao came.

Marvin Sonsona is fresh from a recent victory over a veteran Jose “Carita” Lopez of Puerto Rico. While being undefeated (14 fights, 12 knock outs), Sonsona’s opponent this weekend has a fighting record of 22-7 (11 knock outs).

Sonsona, only 19, gave a hard-hitting and exciting performance to win the title in September when he banged out a unanimous decision over Puerto Rican veteran Jose Lopez, whom he dropped twice, in one of the year’s most entertaining fights. Sonsona had demonstrated that he can punch extremely hard when scoring 12 consecutive KO wins in the Philippines, but he showed maturity and skill in beating Lopez when he moved and boxed in the later rounds as the older man piled on the pressure.

Hernandez looks like being a good test for Sonsona but doesn’t seem to be especially dangerous. He was well beaten by Omar Narvaez when challenging for the WBO flyweight title in Argentina 14 months ago, and in his last fight Hernandez lost a unanimous decision to the stronger and heavier handed Wilbert Uicab in a Mexican flyweight title bout. On Saturday he is moving up in weight to face one of the biggest hitters in the lighter divisions.
