Wifey’s 2nd Pregnancy – Quest for Prenatal Vitamins
Posted on 16. Jan, 2010 by dimaks in Asides
We were still in Japan when my wife got pregnant with our second baby. It was pretty hard because I have to do all the errands at home and still have to attend to my classes as a research student, and for her too because she was advised bed rest during the first trimester of her pregnancy. There was one time she asked her OB-Gyne for vitamins and the Doctor told her they don’t give prenatal vitamins in Japan. She was then told to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and drink lots of water or tea. We asked what particular veges and fruits to eat and avoid. Doctor said none. Oh well wifey is a cunning type so she did some research online. And she found out that if Pineapple is taken by pregnant women in large doses it can induce labor. The fact that she loves eating pineapple that time, it was almost a close call. And the same goes for Papaya fruit, it has a latex substance that can trigger uterine contraction and cause miscarriage. And drinking tea is not safe too because it contains compounds called phenols which make it harder for pregnant women to absorb iron. Because almost always pregnant women are low on iron.
So, yes, for the moms and moms to be out there, isn’t it time to be a little more cunning about the foods that you take?
