Road Development: Quirino Highway-Mindanao Avenue Intersection
Posted on 30. Nov, 2009 by dimaks in Asides
If you are aware of the road excavations going on at the Quirino Highway – Mindanao Avenue intersection and pass by there quiet often, you should have experienced the traffic choke point. I heard that the excavations are for certain road improvement in the area, which looks like a connecting line between Mindanao Avenue and that way going to C5. Anyway, you don’t have to figure out the location very clearly because the thing is, the traffic flow and drivers’ attitudes and cycle have been affected very much. Why I said so? Well, take for example the Jeepneys coming from Mindanao Avenue – those plying the route Mindanao Ave. to C5 / HBC shop. Before, they used to execute their turnaround at the very end of the route. When the construction begun, the traffic jam got severe, so they now cut the trip short and enter JEM 7 subdivision road (which is also excavated side to side for water line repair) then go out at their terminal area, which is about few hundred meters away from HBC. Tendency is, passengers are forced to walk and add more stress to their already tired body battling the daily works and other day to day engagements.
Another bad thing that surfaced out of this is that, motorists have been forced to use the U-turns in the wrong manner, in such a way that they don’t mind counter flowing anymore just to get past the traffic jam. Further more, pedestrian movement especially crossing from HBC to the side going to Bayan, Novaliches is very much affected. People dare to cross the road, racing with the fast moving vehicles. Add to that the irritated and reckless drivers who waited for long boring minutes to get the cue for a go from the manning traffic enforcers.
The place is already a mixture of:
- poorly designated working section (poor warning devices for the motorists)
- inefficient traffic enforcers (who does not seem to know the proper traffic enforcement rules, implementation and ethics)
- irritated and reckless drivers
- heard-headed pedestrians who dare to cross the street amidst fast moving vehicles
- hard-headed passengers (and drivers too) who get off the Jeepneys in the middle of the road
Very untoward incident waiting to happen, right? Around 7pm last night, I was standing by the HBC while watching the traffic mess and a certain guy parked his Chrysler nearby. I was about to ask him where he bought his Mopar parts and before he can open his mouth to reply, we heard a loud noise coming from his ride’s rear. When we took a peek, his precious vehicle got uneven long strips of scratches already. It occurred when a 10-wheeler truck hastily maneuvered the curb near us. It drove away fast and the Chrysler owner could not do anything but swear. He could not get the plate number because the truck’s plate is somewhat unclear and covered with mud.
I wish that this situation and location gets attention from the local government as well as development authority. The traffic flow is severely affected and is getting worse day by day along with the progress of the road construction and augmentation. There is a bunch of potential accidents to happen.
I can go on and on about this intersection and discuss the utterly worst scenario during daytime. But I think this is all it for now. Perhaps next time when I get my thought organization gets replenished again

It just got worse, this morning, for some reason, Mindanao extension is left with one lane open. The volume of traffic coming from the subdivisions inside bagbag and san bartolome, vehicles from Quirino Highway, Valenzuela, vehicles from Mindanao going to Talipapa, all need to pass by this one lane!!!
The 2KM drive, supposed to be 8 minutes from our subdivision, to Mindanao Ave became 1 HOUR!!!!!!! 1 HOUR!!!!!! Can you imagine driving 2 kilometers for 1 HOUR!!!!!!!!! It would have been faster walking!!!!
Nice blog! Cheers!

Marcel,
Thanks for dropping by here. Let’s hope that this situation gets noticed ASAP. Your post “Mindanao Ave. Quirino Highway Traffic” is indeed a way to go.
I will try to post my photos on the subject in a separate post, perhaps.

GMA, Belmonte and Co. Sucks!!!
The worst part is even after they finish their stupid underpass, I think traffic will still be a lot worse when compared to the original road.
The road entering Quirino Highway, which was originally 6 lanes wide and where the bulk of the vehicles(including buses and jeepneys) enter, is now only 2 lanes wide. This will cause serious traffic in Mind. Ave. especially since Quirino is always clogged. Vehicles who want to enter the SB diversion which leads to Nova/Caloocan gets blocked because of the traffic in Quirino and the underpass’ barricades.
In short, were f***ed up!!!
