A Prize Gone

It’s a sad note to recall that I lost a JVC video cam few years ago. It was supposed to be my price from a JVC raffle promo in SM North Edsa. One afternoon, I received a mail, informing me of my winning and that I must visit a certain SM office to formalize the prize claim. I was all the while excited because I won a 56 thousand PhP worth gadget. Unfortunately, my excitement died out when I learned about the procedures that I have to go through. The personnel in-charged of the promo told me that the prize item is still unpaid of tax and that I have to settle it myself first before claiming. I was set aback. I mean what the heck! I had to pay around 8k PhP before I can call the video cam my own. I was disappointed of course so I did not pay. I gave up on the quest and called it a day. No JVC video cam prize for me. I even asked if I can just convert the prize into cash but I got a negative reply.

Now that various issues and concerns pertaining to tax and insurance are on the rise, including vehicles and residence insurance, and in the US, I think they have this motorhome insurance, I think my experience is kind of timely. Is it always like that? Why can’t these supposed prizes be paid of taxes beforehand? I am not well aware of the rulings covering this aspect of commerce and industry, so anybody there who is considerably versatile with the laws covering this domain? I really wanted the video camera but what can I do? 8 thousand Pesos is quite a huge sum for an average salary earner like me.
